Why Silver Wolf Fitness Came to Be
My name is Wolf Skafte-Zauss, the founder, and I have been an athlete for as long as I can remember, at now 67 that is a while! However when I got into triathlons I did have my work cut out for me.
About 20 years ago or thereabouts, my son and I decided to enter the Canberra 70.3 Ironman (1.9km swim, 90km bike ride and 21km run). We gave ourselves nearly 9 months training to get ready for it. Alex, my son is a good swimmer, reasonable bike rider and poor runner, whereby I’m a lousy swimmer, actually I couldn’t even swim a 25m pool length without reverting to breaststroke, pretty good cyclist and good runner. We both completed the 70.3 in 2004 in around 6 hours.
Since then, I have been hooked on tris and during the season I compete in a triathlon every month, usually in the sprint distance (750m, 20km ride and 5km run). I know it’s pretty easy going, however I am considering stepping up to the standard (previously known as the Olympic Distance) which is a 1.5km swim, 40km ride and 10km run.
Triathlons of course require training in three disciplines and a bit of weight training as well. I’m a self coached triathlete and my approach has been reasonably simple:
- swim twice a week
- ride twice a week
- run twice a week
- two strength sessions (one lower and one upper body)
- at least a rest day
On first glance that’s 9 training sessions (note that I include the rest day) – how does this fit into a week, which we call a micro cycle? Well there are two main approaches I take to make it work:
- Have at least a brick session per week and
- If I have not completed the micro cycle at the end of the week I simply keep on going with this cycle until I have finished all the training sessions and then start the next micro cycle (week).
However if you want to get more out of your training then his is where the Silver Wolf platform really shines, it helps those athletes that self coach to become the best they can be, some of the core things that I use all the time are:
- The training log allows me to quickly record activities and analyse them
- I can design my training plan in whatever micro cycles I like and view them in list or calendar form
- The Periodisation Table is a tremendous help when designing my macro cycle, yearly training plan.
- My race results are now all neatly in the one place
- The race calendar makes it easy to have all my race info and costings for the whole season at hand
- Race reviews are one of the core ways to learn and improve – the race review function is super useful to me
